New sponsors!

Today, some news and speculation about potential sponsor deals for next season.

Anfi, a Spanish timeshare group, is looking to become the co-sponsor of Bjarne Riis’ Saxo Bank team next season. The company’s CEO José Luis Trujillo said that he wants his company to become more prominent in Scandinavia - “We have a strategic goal to become more visible in Scandinavia, not least Denmark, as we’d like more Scandinavian timeshare clients.” The company already has a small deal with Saxo Bank, with their logo appearing on the shoulder of their jerseys this year. Considering the company is Spanish, it looks as though their increasing involvement with the team will be tied in to star rider Alberto Contador’s return to some extent.

There have been some reports that Geox are planning to return to cycling. According to Spanish paper Marca, it looks as though there might be some kind of deal with Liquigas. The Italian team’s bosses should be wary of Geox after they left Joxean Matxin and Mauro Giannetti’s team in the lurch at the end of last season.

A Swiss financial services company, IAM (Independent Asset Management) will start a new team next season. The team will look to riders from the company’s home country, and will be lead by former Crédit Agricole assistant, Serge Beucherie.

Given the tough job most teams have to attract and retain sponsorship, the news of sponsors coming into the sport can only be good. Along with Orica coming on board with GreenEdge, it looks as though things are looking up somewhat.
